TANGA YETU

The Tanga yetu project was launched to support the local efforts of the Tanzanian government’s vision for high-quality education especially for young boys and girls in Tanga City. The project applied a variety of innovative approaches aiming at effectively improving children’s learning performance as well as addressing key challenges that limit children’s success in school. This project is implemented in Tanga City through a decentralized structure by engaging institutions at the ministry level (TIE and PORLAG), Local Government Authorities and Tanga communities. Specifically, the interventions aim at achieving the following key outcomes. • Improved learning performance for basic education students in Tanga City • Improved teachers’ motivation and performance • Enhanced community and parents’ participation to effectively participate in their children’s education. 20 primary schools were enrolled whereby 2,000 students from class three to class six were assessed. At first 471 students could not reach the basic level in literacy and numeracy skills. After being enrolled in the program test scores increased from 0.1 to 0.3 standard deviation per student, with impact estimates are high as 0.7. this gives us additional confidence that this project can be replicated across Tanga city schools and schools in the whole country.

DREAMS

The DREAMS project is a comprehensive initiative designed to empower and protect young women in vulnerable communities by providing them with training, health services, and support networks. With a primary focus on reducing the risks of HIV/AIDS and sexual violence, DREAMS implemented biometric health services such as HIV/AIDS screening, enabling early detection and intervention for those affected. The project also delivered targeted education and skills training, equipping girls with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions and build resilience against social challenges.
To bring the project’s impact and goals into the public eye, ATNM collaborated with DREAMS to produce a powerful documentary series. This series documented the journeys of participants, showcased project activities, and highlighted the real-life stories of young women who benefited from the program. By sharing these personal experiences and milestones, the documentary aimed to amplify awareness about the issues faced by young women in these communities and to illustrate the effectiveness of DREAMS in addressing them.
Over the course of the project, DREAMS achieved remarkable success in its mission to support youth at risk. The project reached over 1.3 million girls and boys aged 10-14, providing them with a solid foundation in education, health, and personal safety. Through this reach, DREAMS empowered participants to complete critical training focused on HIV prevention and strategies for reducing sexual violence. By equipping young people with knowledge, healthcare resources, and a support system, DREAMS contributed significantly to fostering a healthier, more resilient generation.
ATNM’s involvement through the documentary series played a pivotal role in raising awareness and educating a broader audience about the achievements and importance of the DREAMS project. The series not only highlighted the project’s successes but also helped to inspire further community involvement and funding support, ensuring that DREAMS could continue expanding its life-changing work. Overall, DREAMS represents a substantial step toward creating safer, healthier communities by investing in the futures of young women and providing them with the skills
